5 Things to Know: Daylight Saving Time, Warning Siren Testing

Don't forget that 9 p.m. Monday is the deadline to enter a photo of your child's Halloween costume in our Patch costume contest!

1. On top of your trick or treating and handing out candy during Monday's Halloween festivities, remember that the deadline for is at 9 p.m. Monday. Make sure to take pictures of your kids in costume before then and upload them !

In case you've missed the promotions, this is an all-Patch contest in which Heidi Klum—the TV personality and model known to don decked-out Halloween costumes—will pick her 10 favorite, most creative entries for a trip to New York City or Los Angeles.

Winners will meet Heidi at their destination, and Patch will donate $1,031 to the charity of each winner's choice. Sounds fun, right? And philanthropic—please consider entering!

2. Nine outdoor warning sirens in Apple Valley will be replaced this week, meaning each will have to be tested for a few seconds in the process. So, when you hear the siren for just a few seconds, it won't be signaling an emergency situation. Contact the with any questions, at 952-953-2700.

3. We're almost ready to "fall back." Daylight saving time is scheduled for 2 a.m. Sunday, which means that at 2 a.m. Sunday, clocks should be reset to 1 a.m. The extra hour can be nice, but get ready for it to be darker, earlier.

4. Some athletics are continuing on in section and state tournaments:

  • The No. 1 boys soccer team advanced to the Class AA state tournament semifinals . They face No. 4 Minneapolis Southwest at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Metrodome.
  • Eastview cross country runner Nick Oelke , scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
  • Eastview football to advance to the section 3AAAAA final against Prior Lake at 7 p.m. Friday, away at Prior Lake. Eastview was the No. 4 seed in the section, Prior Lake is No. 2.

5. Eastview High School's National Honor Society presents its annual Eastview Dialogues lecture, "Unemployment in the United States," from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Eastview Performing Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The discussion panel includes Macalester College economics Professor J. Pete Ferderer, St. Olaf College business and economics Professor Steven D. Soderlind and Gregg Dourgarian, the CEO of Eagan-based Tempworks Software.
