Become a Lifeguard, Sign Up for BizTech Classes

  • Dakota County Technical College for high school students and recent high school graduates to earn college credit from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on June 20-24 and June 27-30, according to a posted announcement. A follow-up day will be held Oct. 20. The course will include a week on either nanoscience technology or imagineering, and a week on starting a business.

  • Westview Elementary will hold its annual school is having their annual school carnival from 5 to 8 p.m. at the school, and volunteers are needed to help run the booths, according to a school announcement. If you're interested in helping with a one-hour shift or more, contact tracye@itrgroupinc.com.
  • The Eastview High School girls track and field team will hold a fundraiser to receive 10 percent of profits from Buffalo Wild Wings this Monday evening and next Monday (April 25). The restaurant will give 10 percent of the profits from any purchase that uses a coupon sold by the track team. See a track athlete or email   jorjean.fishcer@district196.org for a coupon.
  • The District 196 Community Education program will offer several options for American Red Cross lifeguarding classes this summer, including weekend and weekday sessions, according to an announcement. There are also opportunities to renew lifeguarding and CPR certification. Check out the website for details and to register.
  • The Apple Valley High School mens and womens soccer teams will host a junior Eagle soccer camp for grades one through eight on June 20-23 at the Hayes Senior and Community Center fields, according to a school announcement. Register online through the Valley Athletic Association.
  • District 196 is offering a summer academy for academically talented middle school students, scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon July 25-29 at Falcon Ridge Middle School, according to a school announcement. Sessions include: Chess: The Game of Kings; Digital Photography; LEGO Robotics Engineering, Magic of the Stage: Acting I; Whodunit: The Science of Crime Scenes; and many more. Registration forms are available on the district's website. The registration deadline is May 6.
  • A Zumba class will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 1 at Eastview High School as a fundraiser for the senior graduation party, according to a school announcement. To register, send your name, phone number and email address, as well as $5 per student or $10 per adult attending, to Belinda McSparron, 13800 Flagstaff Ave., Apple Valley, MN 55124.   • Eastview High School's football team will take orders for its spring geranium sale through April 30, according to an announcement from the school. The customer pick-up date will be May 21 at the entrance to the high school varsity field. To place an order, contact Jill at evsportsmom7@yahoo.com.
  • Middle school students in District 196 will be released at 11:45 a.m. on May 13 so staff can plan for the new six-period schedule that will be implemented this fall, according to school announcements. Students will eat lunch at school before being released.
  • Eastview High School's National Honor Society will host its scholarship 5K race and kids fun run on Saturday, April 30, according to a school announcement. Proceeds will benefit the the school's NHS scholarship fund and academic literacy programs.

T-shirt pickup begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Eastview stadium.

Kids one-half or one-mile run around the track begins at 8:30 a.m.

5K run begins at 9 a.m., starting at Eastview and going through the Cedar Isle neighborhood, and finishing at Eastview's stadium. Chip timing will be provided, and the course is USA Track and Field certified. Strollers and dogs are welcome at the race, but the school asks that competitive runners be given space at the starting line.

Those interested can register online via active.com. Registration forms also are available in Eastview's main office.

Registration fees are $25 in advance or $30 day-of for 5K participants, and $10 in advance or $15 day-of for kids.

  • Apple Valley High School's senior party committee will hold a Ford test drive fundraiser at the school from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, according to a school announcement. People 18 or older are asked to sign up in advance to test drive one of the cars for about 15 minutes; for each driver, Ford will donate $20. Funds will support the senior class party and will buy a gift from the senior class to the school. Prizes will be awarded during the event.
