Five Things You Should Know Today: August 31

We're ending August on a high note: Today's forecast calls for perfect early-fall weather.

  1. The National Weather Service says we can expect some patchy fog before 10 this morning, then cloudy skies becoming mostly sunny, and a high near 79. Winds will be from the south and southeast at 5 to 7 mph. The low tonight will be around 69, with light winds. Open those windows.  
  2. Today is Ride and Read Day at the Minnesota State Fair, which means adults can get into the fair for $10 if they show a public library card at the gate (or $7 for seniors and children between 5 and 12). Tonight’s sold-out grandstand show is by country star Toby Keith. For a complete schedule of today’s fair events, click here.   
  3. Rosemount’s three public elementary schools will hold back-to-school open houses today. Open houses are scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Parkview and Shannon Park, and from 4 to 6 p.m. at Rosemount Elementary School, with new family orientation from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at Rosemount.
  4. There’s an starting at 10:30 a.m. at River Valley Church, 14898 Energy Way in Apple Valley. Anyone who donates will receive a $5 Bakers Square gift card – and will be entered into a drawing for a $500 gasoline card.
  5. Today is National Trail Mix Day. Really. It’s certainly not some manufactured observance concocted by the powerful trail mix industry. Perish the thought.
