Five Things You Should Know Today: July 21

You knew if we waited long enough, the heat would break, right? Today's the day.

  1. It will be possible to walk outdoors today without first donning scuba gear. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high near 85, with winds from the west around 7 mph. And you may be able to give your air conditioner the night off: Tonight’s forecast is for a 20 percent chance of rain, with a low around 66.
  2. Bring the kids (ages 6 to 12) to Rosemount’s Jaycee Park at 1 p.m. today for a . The city’s parks and recreation staff will provide games, entertainment and surprises. Everyone’s invited, and admission is free. 
  3. Bring your old cell phones to Mendota Heights today and donate them to the drive. The group hopes to turn old phones into more than 12 million minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops serving overseas. Phones will be collected today  at 235 Wentworth Ave. W. in Mendota Heights. 
  4. If you’d like to enjoy the cooler weather with an evening activity, head for Inver Grove Heights’ event. Tonight’s feature, “Open Season 3,” will begin at approximately 8:53 p.m. in North and South Valley Parks, 2810 70th St. E. Admission is free; bring a blanket and bug spray. 
  5. Today is National Ice Cream Day. It’s also National Junk Food Day and National Tug-of-War Tournament Day. Your mission: Celebrate all three simultaneously. Be sure to take pictures.
