Five Things You Should Know Today: July 6

Today will be a perfect summer day – a great opportunity to check out some live music outdoors.

  1. The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny day today, with a high near 82 and light winds – and a calm evening, too, with lows around 62 and no turbulent weather.
  2. Looking for a place to spread a blanket and listen to some music? Check out Eagan’s for grades 9 through 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Central Park, with the winner moving on to compete at the Dakota County Fair and maybe the Minnesota State Fair.
  3. If Eagan seems too far away, how about Lakeville? The city’s ninth annual is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Antlers Park, featuring a live DJ, a dance, games and inflatables – for teens ages 12 to 15.
  4. Minnesota icon Garrison Keillor launched his equally iconic radio show “A Prairie Home Companion” on this day in 1974, broadcast live from Macalester College in St. Paul. The show’s first national broadcast came almost four years later.
  5. Today is also National Fried Chicken Day, the 96th anniversary of the birth of Laverne Andrews – one of the singing Andrews Sisters – in Minneapolis, and the the 13th anniversary of the death of cowboy actor Roy Rogers.
