Five Things You Should Know Today: July 8

You think the weather's been kind of boring the last few days? Don't knock it – at least it's not rain. Or snow.

  1. Friday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 85 and light and variable winds, according to the National Weather Service.  Rain doesn’t show up in the forecast until Saturday, when there’s a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m.
  2. Tonight is in Lakeville. Come and watch more than 550 classic cars cruise through downtown Lakeville from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with many cars on display after the parade. If you’ve got a car 25 years or older and you want to join in, you can register between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.
  3. On this day in 1889, the federal government and the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe signed a treaty that ceded 2,905,000 “surplus” acres from the reservation, which allowed the band to hold the land in common and protect it from piecemeal sales.
  4. Actor Kevin Bacon – he of the six degrees – turns 53 today. Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck turns 62. And Jaden Smith, the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, turns 13.
  5. Today is National Video Games Day AND National Milk Chocolate with Almonds Day. Commemorate both by eating a Hershey bar with almonds while playing your Wii.
