Five Things You Should Know Today: September 15

Yes, OK, we knew it was inevitable. But the first frost is always a kick in the head.

  1. The National Weather Service is predicting “widespread frost” before 8 this morning, but it’s also predicting sunny skies, with a high near 55 and light winds. Only “patchy frost” is predicted after midnight tonight, with clear skies and a low around 34.  
  2. National American University in Burnsville is , and serving snacks and cake to mark the occasion. The public is invited between 11 a.m. and noon; the university is located at 513 W. Travelers Trail. 
  3. The Rosemount Police Department is accepting applications through Sept. 23 for its yearly Citizens’ Police Academy. The academy, which covers a variety of police topics and offers the chance for a ride-along at the end of the program, will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 3 through Nov. 14. Space is limited to 25 people. For more information and an application, check the academy’s website.

  5. Today is Battle of Britain Day in the United Kingdom. The day commemorates the World War II air campaign waged by the German air force against Britain during the summer and autumn of 1940 – the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces. The yearly observance celebrates Germany’s failure to destroy Great Britain’s air defenses during that battle.
