MnZoo Offers Free Admission for Old Cell Phones

For just over two weeks in March, Dakota County residents can get in gratis if they bring a defunct Blackberry, iPhone or flip-phone.

Can't seem to get rid of that worn Samsung from 2005? Don't chuck it into the trash, use at as a pass to get into the Minnesota Zoo.

For a limited time, from March 1 to March 17, the zoo will waive admission for those who bring in an old cell for recycling. Tickets to the zoo cost $12 to $18, more if you plan to go to the IMAX Theatre.

The “Recycle for Rainforests” promotion is the fruit of a partnership between the zoo and MPC, a Mendota Heights company. The promotion has a three-fold benefit: It keeps hazardous e-waste out of landfills, reduces the demand for minerals used in cell phones and other electronic devices (which are often mined in the African rainforests, much to the forests detriment), and raises money for rain forest conservation. Officials at the zoo say $18,000 in conservation funds have been raised since 2010.
