Water main flushing might affect water color

Rosemount city crews will begin flushing water mains on May 23; the procedure might temporarily discolor the city’s water supply.

City crews flush the water system every spring to help keep pipes in good condition and to check for problems in water mains and fire hydrants.

This year’s flushing is expected to be complete by June 10.

One of the side effects of the procedure is that water might briefly appear brown because of minerals that are stirred up. Residents who notice discolored water should avoid doing laundry until after flushing home pipes by letting faucets run for a few minutes until the water becomes clear.

Rosemount city cleanup day scheduled May 21

The city of Rosemount has scheduled a citywide cleanup day for May 21 in the west parking lot at Dakota County Technical College, 1300 145th St. E.

The event is for Rosemount residents only, and a driver’s license or other proof of residency will be required. There will be a fee to dispose of many items; a full price list is available here

The city is working with J.R.’s Advanced Recyclers on collection and disposal of electronic equipment and appliances, and anyone who drops off those items will pay J.R.’s directly. For other items, residents will pay the city.

The lineup to drop off items will begin at the University of Minnesota research facility and extend north along Akron Avenue. Participants are asked to enter from Highway 3 or Blaine Avenue onto 160th Avenue.

City honored as ‘bike-friendly’ community

The city of Rosemount received an honorable mention for its bicycle-friendly facilities and policies in a competition sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists.

The league recognizes cities for such policies as safety, education and signage. Rosemount was one of three Minnesota cities to receive the designation this year; Minneapolis won the organization’s gold-level recognition and Rochester received a bronze-level award.

Rosemount is in the process of implementing a pedestrian and bicycle master plan, approved last year by the City Council. The goal is to create a community in which walking and biking are safe, convenient and enjoyable.
