Snow is in the Forecast, Apple Valley

Motorists could experience slow going Thursday morning because of light snow, says the National Weather Service. Heavy snow could be in the offing this weekend.

This morning’s National Weather Service forecast contains a phrase Apple Valley residents haven’t uttered so far this fall: heavy snow.

In a Hazardous Weather Outlook statement issued at 3:37 a.m. for Apple Valley and the rest of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the weather service says there is a possibility of heavy snow this weekend, when a storm system moves into the Upper Midwest.

At this time, the weather service says this weekend's snow could be substantial in portions of south-central and east-central Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin.

Meterologist Todd Nelson, in his forecast in the Star Tribune Tuesday night, says this weekend’s storm system “bears watching.” He predicts a “possible bigger snow event” occurring somewhere in the Upper Midwest, but it’s too early to call.

As of this morning, the seven-day forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of snow and a high near 34 Saturday and a continuing chance Saturday night. Partly sunny skies are predicted to return Sunday.

While this weekend’s weather might be attention-grabbing, Apple Valley motorists could be facing more pressing weather matters as soon as Thursday morning. This morning’s weather alert calls for light snow beginning tonight and continuing into tomorrow’s morning rush hour.

Snow depths should be under one inch, but that’s enough to play havoc with the morning traffic.

Apple Valley and the rest of the Twin Cities continues to run a deficit in average snowfall for the season, according to the weather service. So far this fall, the Twin Cities has received 3 inches of snow, which is 6.4 inches below normal.
