Use Seuss as an Excuse to Get Out of the House This Weekend

Catch a concert or attend a student film festival, as well.

When/Where: 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday;

Why Go: It's the last show of the Apple Valley Arts Foundation's free winter concert series; bring the family to see Menage a Neuf, a fun funk and R&B band.

When/Where: 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday;

Why Go: Support future filmmakers of America by going to see movies produced by students in District 196 middle schools and high schools—you'll even get to vote for your favorite. The Rosemount High School performing arts department also will screen three of its short films.

Cost: $5 at the door

When/Where: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Burnsville Performing Arts Center

Why Go: This show portrays eight journeys in one play, set in the town of Almost, Maine during a display of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. Follow the residents and visitors of this small town as they fall in and out of love in unexpected, surprising and honest ways.

Cost: $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and students; general admission

When/Where: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; YogaSoul Center, Eagan

Why Go: Anyone interested in meditation, reducing stress and self-improvement is invited to workshops with globally recognized author and trainer Dr. Gurucharan Singh Khalsa, a psychotherapist, teacher, writer and internationally known expert in Kundalini Yoga. The first course this weekend explores the 21 stage of meditation.

Cost: Prices range from $35 for the Friday session to $180 for each weekend day

When/Where: 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday; Pleasant Hill Library, Hastings

Why Go: This one's a bit of a hike, but is there a better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2) than with a slew of activities devoted to him and the characters he created? Read, watch films and do crafts all with a Dr. Seuss theme. For kids ages 0-6.

If you can't make this activity, note that Dr. Seuss's The Lorax animated movie comes out in theaters on March 2, as well; in Apple Valley will have showings all weekend.
