Five Things You Should Know Today: August 11

Temps will inch up a bit today, but we can still bask in pleasant weather without the impossible humidity.

  1. Expect sunny skies today, with a high near 79, the National Weather Service says. Winds will be light from the west and southwest. Tonight’s low will reach 61, and there’s a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m.
  2. Today is Senior Day at the Dakota County Fair in Farmington. Visitors can watch 4-H horse, swine and poultry judging, enjoy free root-beer floats, watch a tractor parade and a sheriff’s canine officer demonstration and listen to music by the Eelpout Stringers, the Legacy Celt Band and the Johnny Holm Band. 3. A performance of “,” featuring cast members between the ages of 7 and 17, will be presented beginning tonight at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $13 for adults and $11 for students and seniors.  Additional performances are scheduled Friday and Saturday.
  4. It’s at the Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul. Doors open at 6 p.m., with lessons at 6:15 and live music from 7 to 10. The Minnesota Jazz Orchestra will provide live music tonight. Admission is $7.
  5. On this day in 1971, Minnesota’s Harmon Killebrew hit his 500th and 501st home runs. And on Aug. 11, 1979, the low temperature hit 28 degrees in Embarrass, Minn. (Today is also national Presidential Joke Day, but if you think we’re going to list any here, think again.)
