Five Things You Should Know Today: July 13

Like the weather yesterday? Then you'll love today's forecast.

  1. Today will be almost a repeat of yesterday weatherwise, according to the National Weather Service, which is predicting mostly sunny skies with a high near 76 and light winds. There’s a chance of showers late tonight.
  2. It should be another lovely evening for an outdoor concert, so head for the Minnesota Zoo tonight to hear at 7:30. Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.
  3. On this day in 1890, high winds capsized the excursion steamer Sea Wing on Lake Pepin. Of the 179 passengers on board the ship and a barge that it was towing, almost 100 people drowned, most of them young adults.
  4. On July 13, 1977, the city of Kinney, in St. Louis County, seceded from the United States after the city council became frustrated over unsuccessful attempts to get a grant from the federal government for a water project. Although the feds didn’t recognize Kinney as a foreign country, Duluth frozen-food king Jeno Paulucci sympathized, giving the city a used Ford to replace its police car – which no longer ran – and also threw in 10 cases of frozen pizza.
  5. Today is Harrison Ford’s 69th birthday. And Patrick Stewart (or Sir Patrick Stewart, if you want to be precise) turns 70. We should all look so good at those ages.
