Five Things You Should Know Today: June 30

Remember just a few months ago and all the wind-chill index reports? Well, today we'll actually have a heat index to worry about.

  1. Drink plenty of water and slather on the sunscreen if you’re outside today: The National Weather Service predicts a high this afternoon near 93, with heat index values as high as 103. Winds will be from the south at 9 to 14 mph.
  2. Bring a blanket and some cold drinks for Rosemount’s series. Today’s performance, at 10 a.m., is by Ms. Catherine, who specializes in teaching children sharing and respect. The location is 2875 145th St. W., and the event is free.
  3. On this day in 1992, a train derailment in Superior, Wis., sent a tanker car of benzene into the Nemadji River. The resulting cloud of toxic smoke led authorities to evacuate 50,000 residents of Superior and Duluth.
  4. In 1990, New Kids on the Block kicked off a three-week stay at the top of the American singles chart with “Step by Step.” What’s old is new: New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys teamed up early this month for a summer tour, which hits the Target Center on July 15. And tickets are still available.
  5. Famous folks born today: Olympic swimming gold medalist Michael Phelps, who turns 26; fighter Mike Tyson, celebrating his 45th birthday; and it's the 94th anniversary of Lena Horne’s birth.
