Dog Day Getaway Moves to New Digs in Apple Valley

The pet boarding and daycare business is expanding into a 9,000-square-foot building on Felton Court.

Nicole Boe and Carey Griffith Edwards were ahead of the curve when they first opened Dog Day Getaway in Apple Valley.

The business partners were introduced to the idea of dog daycare in 2003, while visiting family separately on the East and West Coasts. There, the concept had already caught fire, Boe said. But back in Minnesota, facilities that took in dogs for short-term daily care were still scarce, Boe said.

Thus, a business was born.

After nine successful years, the Farmington residents are taking their business to the next level. This summer, Dog Day Getaway will move into a new 9,000-square-foot space at 14607 Felton Court in Apple Valley.

The move represents a significant expansion for the daycare and dog boarding business, which was bursting at the seams at its current, 6,400-square-foot space, Boe said.

"We’ve expanded down as far as we can go in the building," Boe said. "[With the new building,] we’ll be able to add to our capacity."

Once the move is complete, Boe and Griffith Edwards plan to add a number of features to the business, including larger indoor and outdoor play and relief areas, grooming and a self-wash station for dogs, plus classes and training sessions. The new business will also have noise mitigation measures in place, although Boe noted that they have never received a noise complaint from any of their current neighbors.

The expansion will also allow Dog Day Getaway to house as many 120 dogs at one time, Boe said. The business' current maximum is 80 pets.

On May 7, the Apple Valley City Council approved a conditional use permit and finding for similar use that paved the way for Dog Day to move to its new location.

At the meeting, Apple Valley Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland took a moment to congratulate the business owners.

"These two young ladies are really great business people in the community," Hamann-Roland said. "They’re involved in everything, including the Chamber of Commerce, and I really commend you for that."

"To go into a building that’s brand new, and watch them put up a big sign on the door ... it’s a sense of accomplishment," Boe said. "The city supports us, and we're glad we were able to find a situation that allowed us to stay in the city."
