5 Things to Know: Recognize Veterans Day, Drink Coffee With Cops

Don't forget to vote in the District 196 school board race on Tuesday.

1. Veterans Day—the day we recognize all who have served in the United States Armed Forces—is Friday. will host a Veterans Day ceremony from 9 to 9:50 a.m. in the school's gym. All military veterans and active military personnel are invited. also has an annual Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony.

2. Election day 2011 is Tuesday. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. to vote to fill four seats on the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district board of education. Check out our to find where to vote, and our to help you decide who to vote for.

3. The Dakota County library system is seeking participants for its first local author fair, scheduled for Jan. 21 at the in Apple Valley. Local authors, illustrators, publishers and literary agents are invited to display, discuss and sell their work, and to network and learn more about different facets of the business; participation is free. The fair will feature author David Housewright as its main speaker, and The Loft Literary Center will hold writing and publishing workshops.

If interested, fill out an application by 5 p.m. Nov. 30, as space is limited to 40 people.

4. Apple Valley High School presents its fall musical, "Little Shop of Horrors," this week, with shows from Thursday through Sunday (as well as a special 3 p.m. Wednesday matinee for senior citizens). Shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday in the school theater. Call the box office between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day this week at 952-431-8208.

5. If you've got some spare time Tuesday morning—maybe on your way to or from the polls—stop in at in Apple Valley to chat with during their Coffee with the Cops event. The event is an open forum for residents and workers in Apple Valley to meet law enforcement and discuss topics on their minds.

BONUS ITEM: High school winter sports start this week. Time flies, doesn't it? The Apple Valley High School girls hockey team opens the season at Woodbury High School on Thursday, and the girls hockey team plays at Hastings on Thursday.
