Construction Begins on I-494, Delays Expected

July 1 should pose a challenge to morning commuters who use the 34th Avenue ramps at I-494, who should expect delays and detours due to a major road construction project.

Commuters beware. Beginning today, July 1, construction in Bloomington will impact traffic at the junction of I-494 at 34th Avenue. Drivers who use the ramp at 34th are advised to expect delays and detours, and allow for extra driving time.

The westbound exit ramp at the junction will be closed. Drivers will directed to a detour routed to the 24th Avenue exit off I-494.

Crews will be constructing a "Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)" at 34th, the first of its kind in the Twin Cities metro area. The project is spearheaded by The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), the City of Bloomington and Metro Transit. Officials say the DDI project will "improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance safety."

Construction will occur in five phases, from Monday until November.

Construction of the DDI happens to coincide with several other MnDOT road projects in the area, including improvements on I-494 west of of the airport and changes to Lindau Lane.
