Remembering Our Iraq War Casualties: Capt. Doring & Spec. McDonald

The Iraq War claimed the lives of nearly 70 Minnesotans, among them were Marine Capt. Nathanael James Doring, 31, of Apple Valley, and Army Spec. Sean Karl McDonald, 21, of Rosemount.

This week is the 10-year anniversary of the beginning of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq that eventually led to the capture, trial and execution of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. 

Lost in the war were two local men.

Marine Capt. Nathanael James Doring, 31, of Apple Valley, was one of two Marines killed when their AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopter crashed into Lake Habbaniyah during a maintenance test flight near Taqqadum, Iraq, on May 27, 2006. The following rememberance pages have been set up for Doring:

Army Spec. Sean Karl McDonald, 21, of Rosemount, was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq, on March 25, 2007. The following rememberance pages have been set up for McDonald:

By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including nearly 70 Minnesotans.
