Star Tribune: Wolf Escapes Minnesota Zoo Enclosure, is Fatally Shot

A Minnesota Zoo wolf escaped from its enclosure on Wednesday, and zoo staff had to kill it because of the possibility that it could come near zoo visitors, according to a Star Tribune report.

Minnesota Zoo staff shot and killed one of its three Mexican gray wolves on Wednesday, according to a Star Tribune breaking news report, after the wolf escaped around 10 a.m. from its enclosure through an opening in his chain-link holding area and scaled another 8-foot fence.

The story says the wolf didn't leave the zoo grounds and nobody was harmed. Tony Fisher, the zoo's animal collections manager, says in the Star Tribune story that a tranquilizer gun would've taken too long to take effect, and doesn't have the range of a traditional gun.

A note posted on the zoo's Facebook page expresses sadness about the incident, but says the actions were appropriate to protect guests and staff.

"This is the first time anything of this sort has happened at the Minnesota Zoo, and we will redouble our efforts to prevent anything like it from happening again," the Facebook post says.
