Master Sergeant, Church Board Member Dies at 73

Norlyn R. Smith, of Apple Valley, passed away on July 31, 2013 at the age of 73.

Smith was born on Oct. 5, 1939 in Collins, Iowa. He spent 40 years working for the 934th Tactical Airlift Wing of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Air Reserve Station. He retired as a Master Sargent. He also was a member of Parents Without Partners, American Legion Post 1776, Voiture 1457 of the 40 & 8, and the Apple Valley Senior Center. He served on the church boards of Olivet Congregational Church, St. Paul and Bethel Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis. 

He is preceded in death by his mother Charlotte, his father Ord, and his brother Larry.

Smith is survived by his daughter, Tiffany Johnson, and his sister, Claretta Whitlatch of Ames, Iowa.

A funeral service for Smith will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. at White Funeral Home in Apple Valley. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
