Apple Valley Police Warn of Thefts From Shoppers After Wallets, Purses Allegedly Stolen

Police have responded to six reports of purse and wallet thefts from retail shoppers so far in 2012, according to a crime alert.

Apple Valley police released a crime alert Thursday afternoon that thus far in 2012, officers have responded to six reports of purses or wallets allegedly stolen from people while they were shopping at Apple Valley retail outlets.

Most of the alleged victims told police they were using a shopping cart and believed their purse or wallet was taken while they were looking at other store merchandise.

Two people told police that their credit cards were used immediately after the alleged thefts.

Officers are obtaining surveillance video from the businesses to try to identify suspects, the crime alert says. 

Police offer the following tips to help prevent purse or wallet theft, and to deal with the situation if you believe you're a victim of theft:

  • Keep your purse/wallet close to your body when shopping
  • Don't leave personal belongings unattended
  • Don't carry unnecessary credit cards or a lot of cash when out and about
  • If you notice your wallet or identification is missing, contact your bank and credit card companies and close your accounts; know what's in your wallet to help you with this
  • Be mindful of people around you or your cart, or asking for help, at stores
  • Report suspicious activity or possible theft to 911 immediately
