Man Allegedly Breaks Into Apple Valley Home, Uses Knife to Threaten Mother of His Children

Osman Abdi Bashir is charged with three counts of first-degree burglary, one count of second-degree assault and one count of making terroristic threats.

A Minneapolis man is being held in Dakota County Jail on several charges after police say he allegedly broke into the Apple Valley home of his children's mother, came into her bedroom while she was sleeping and threatened her with a knife.

Osman Abdi Bashir, 29, is charged with three counts of first-degree burglary, one count of second-degree assault and one count of making terroristic threats, all felonies. The maximum combined penalty for the charges is 72 years in prison and a $129,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to a home on Whitney Drive on Feb. 11 on report of assault; the caller allegedly said she was afraid Bashir would "do something crazy" if he found out police were there.

The house was dark, and initially nobody answered the door, the complaint says. Eventually, two women—one who later said she was the mother of Bashir's children, one her friend—came to the door and pointed upstairs. Police went upstairs and saw a knife on the floor in the bedroom, and on a second search found Bashir under the bed, the complaint says.

Bashir allegedly struggled as police arrested him, according to the complaint; he gave a statement saying he was invited into the house.

The mother told police, crying and shaking, that Bashir allegedly has been breaking into her house for several years, but that she believed he would kill her and her friend this time, the complaint says. She said Bashir had threatened to kill her before, and broken into the house before, the complaint says.

She said she and her friend were asleep when she allegedly woke up to find Bashir standing over her, according to the complaint.

He brought her into another bedroom and onto the bed, the mother said, and allegedly pulled out a knife from her kitchen, the complaint says.

She told police, according to the complaint, that he said things like "Why are you doing this to me?" "Why would you want your kids to be orphans?" and "I can't live without you."

According to the complaint, the mother's friend heard Bashir wake up the mother, and, afraid, she called 911. She told police Bashir allegedly went under the bed when police knocked on the door.

Bashir was convicted in Minnesota of fifth-degree assault and second-degree assault in June 2011, and violating orders for protection in both August 2010 and October 2010, court records show.

He is being held in Dakota County Jail on $500,000 bond, with the condition that he stays one mile away from the alleged victim's house, or $250,000 with the conditions that he has no contact with the alleged victims or children, abides by orders for protection, makes court appearances and doesn't have or use firearms.

His omnibus hearing is scheduled for March 6.
