What Are the Rules for Recreational Fires?

It's that time of year when outdoor fires will soon be in full swing. Find out what you need to know about local recreational fires.

Whether it's for roasting marshmallows to entertain the kids, or a backdrop for relaxed conversation with neighbors and friends, recreational fires in residential areas have greatly increased in popularity in recent years. 

If you're planning on enjoying the crackle of flames in your yard in , there are a few safety tips and regulations you should know.

Recreational fires:

  • Under a City ordinance, before you ignite a fire, you need to verify if there are any restrictions on having a recreational fire on that particular day.  Please call 952-953-7623 and listen carefully to the recorded message. 
  • You as the property owner assume ALL responsibility for damages or injuries that directly or indirectly result from your fire. 
  • The maximum size of a recreational fire in the City of Rosemount is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet. 
  • You must extinguish your fire immediately upon the request of the Rosemount Police or Fire Departments. 
  • You must attend to the fire until it is completely extinguished. 
  • You must maintain a minimum distance of 25 feet from any structure or property line. 


Prohibited burning materials are: leaves, brush, oil, rubber, plastic, tires, and chemically treated materials such as railroad ties, treated lumber, composite shingles, tar paper, insulation, composition board, hazardous waste or garbage.
