5 Things to Know: Homecoming Week at Apple Valley High School

Also, the Apple Valley City Council and District 196 School Board meet this week.

1. It's Homecoming week at ; look for coverage of Monday night's coronation to find out which students are named king and queen, as well as Tuesday's powderpuff football tournament and Thursday's pep fest.

2. The Apple Valley City Council is scheduled to meet for a work session from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and for a regular session beginning at 8 p.m. n the agenda is the recommendation from the Planning Commission to approve a site plan and building permit for the foundation of the new clubhouse.

3. It's also National Fire Prevention Week, held the week of Oct. 9 each year because that's the date in 1871 when the Great Chicago Fire started. There where Apple Valley residents can attend an open house at one of the city's fire stations to learn more about fire prevention, and what to do if there is a fire in their home.

4. The District 196 School Board will hear a report on district enrollment and on Adequate Yearly Progress results at Monday's 6 p.m. meeting at in Apple Valley. AYP, which is defined in the federal No Child Left Behind act, is measured mostly based on student performance on state standardized tests; Apple Valley Patch about a week and a half ago when they were released.

The board also will recognize physical education teacher George Beran .

5. We're getting into fall sports playoff season; this week, boys and girls soccer start Class 2AA section play.

  • Apple Valley girls soccer is away at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Park High School in Cottage Grove
  • Apple Valley boys soccer is home () at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against
  • girls soccer is home at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Henry Sibley
  • The No. 1-ranked Eastview boys soccer team begins section play at home at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Hastings
