Rosemount City Council Partakes in Rare Face-to-Face with Planning Commission

An Aug. 9 joint meeting between two city entities resulted in a better understanding of new and ongoing projects throughout the city.

The City Council held a joint informational meeting Tuesday with city staff and members of the planning commission.

The purpose of the meeting was to have a rare face-to-face between the council and commission, especially since there are a number of new members on the planning commission, some having been sworn in as recently as April. The meeting also served as a way to make sure members of the council and commission are in sync with the way they represent the city to the public on matters of development happening in the community.

Mayor Bill Droste felt that the UMore development project, which he characterized as “complex, large, and hard to understand,” warranted a special meeting with the Planning Commission to bring everyone up to speed on what has transpired to date and what will be happening in the near future.

Many of the anticipated development projects, both for UMore and other projects within the city, will eventually be brought before the Planning Commission whose responsibility is to evaluate applications, for example zoning variances or use permits, against city codes and ordinances. Based on whether an application meets established city guidelines, the commission advises the city council and recommends approval or denial.

The City Council then, according to Droste, has to take into consideration the associated political issues surrounding a project before deciding whether or not to abide by the planning commission’s recommendation. Such roles and responsibilities also were part of the evening’s agenda.
