City Seeks Input on New Voting Precinct Boundaries for Apple Valley

Cities have until April 3 to establish their precinct boundaries, after state district boundaries changes were announced in February.

The city of Apple Valley is seeking public input about changes to the boundaries of voting precincts, which the Apple Valley City Council could adopt this week. The city council is scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Apple Valley Municipal Center.

The current boundaries map can be found here. The proposed new boundaries map is here. Both also are attached to this article. Apple Valley will continue to have 16 voting precincts, according to a city announcement, though the suggested precinct numbers have changed.

Cities have until April 3 to finalize their voting precinct boundaries in response to the state's redistricting plan, which was announced Feb. 21 by the Minnesota Supreme Court-appointed special redistricting panel.

State redistricting comes every 10 years, after the U.S. Census; the law requires all districts to be similar in population.

While Apple Valley district (57), and split into two state House districts (57A and 57B) under the plan, voting precinct boundaries cannot cross legislative district boundaries. The state did change the overall district boundaries to eliminate the Burnsville portion, add Coates and add part of Lakeville.
