Five Things You Should Know Today: August 9

We're going to have a brief taste of fall today – perfect for a trip to the Dakota County Fair.

  1. The National Weather Service is predicting partly sunny skies today, with a high of only 72. It’ll be windy, though, with northwest winds between 7 and 16 mph, and gusts approaching 25 mph. And you can leave the windows open and the air conditioner off tonight: The low will be 53, with winds becoming calm.
  2. Today’s Dakota County Fair schedule includes 4-H horse, dairy and rabbit judging, threshing and sheriff’s canine demonstrations, a tractor parade, a 4-H bird-calling competition, a children’s wolf-howling contest, the amateur talent contest semifinals and a free concert by Ali Gray. 3. The Rosemount City Council and Rosemount Planning Commission will hold a joint meeting from 6:30 to 9:30 tonight in Rosemount City Hall. The agenda includes discussions of UMore Park issues, including environmental and transportation studies, a mining permit and the UMore ballfields. Although the public is welcome to attend, public comments during work sessions are usually not solicited.
  4. It’s today at Rosemount’s Robert Trail Library. Children from newborns to 24 months, along with parents or caregivers, are welcome. Story time runs from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
  5. Today’s wish-you-could-be-there birthday dinner party would include Dustin Hoffman, born on this day in 1937; Deion Sanders, celebrating his 44th; Whitney Houston, born in 1963; hockey player Brett Hull, born in 1964; and Howard Stern cohort Robin Quivers, marking her 59th birthday. (Who do you think would get disgusted and leave first? My money's on Dustin.)
