Five Things You Should Know Today: September 21

Fall is going to arrive before summer is over, but then summer's going to come back. Yeah, it's kind of confusing.

  1. The National Weather Service is predicting a 50 percent chance of showers today, under cloudy skies, with a high near 53. Winds will be from the northwest between 13 and mph. Tonight’s low will be around 41, with mostly cloudy skies and more northwesterly winds around 10 mph. But hang on – things are looking better for the weekend. Honest.  
  2. Bet you never knew that Farmington played a role in the Civil War (and if you did know, pretend like you didn’t, because this sounds like a very cool program). A presentation called “” is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the Dakota County Library, 508 3rd St. in Farmington, with historian David Schreier. 
  3. Bring your kids to the Pleasant Hill Library in Hastings at 4 today for “Waggin’ Tails.” Kids ages 5 through 10 can read aloud to certified therapy dogs. The dogs like it, and it helps kids develop reading skills and fluency. It’s a win-win! 
  4. , which addresses environmental management, farmland and natural areas protection, geographic information systems, parks, planning, roads and highways, will meet at 9 this morning at 14955 Galaxie Ave. in Apple Valley. All seven county commissioners are members of the committee, and the public is welcome. 
  5. Today is author Stephen King’s 64th birthday. Seriously, wouldn’t you hate to have that guy’s nightmares? Although, come to think of it, maybe he has nightmares about fuzzy kittens and pretty flowers.
