Rosemount: Property Taxes to Decrease for Fourth Year in a Row

Council had little discussion before approving the preliminary 2012 budgets

The Rosemount City Council approved the 2012 preliminary budgets at Tuesday night's regular council meeting.

According to City Administrator Dwight Johnson, for the fourth year in a row, city taxes will fall on the median-valued home. The median-valued home in Rosemount is set at a little over $200,000, Johnson said.

Property taxes will decrease by $38, according to early data, however, there is still some information that needs to be calculated, he said. There has been an overall tax decline of $204, or of about 19 percent, since 2008.

"This budget is certainly good news for local taxpayers," Johnson said.

According to Jeff May, the city's finance director, there will be two values that people will see on a card that will be mailed to them regarding their property values.

You will see two values: one value is what the county thinks your house is valued at and [the other] is a value with an exclusion, which is the value that you're actually taxed on, May said.

Going forward, the City Council will conduct a public hearing on the budget before taking final action. The hearing will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 6, during the City Council regular meeting at 7:30 p.m.

"We will work on this [budget] until December," Mayor Bill Droste said. "After Dec. 6, we can't increase the levy at all, but we can decrease it."

Johnson also added at the meeting that when determining the 2012 budget, they took into consideration higher fuel costs, some uncertainty in personnel, off-setting major reductions in debt levies, and have seen some savings in energy costs and keeping a couple of city jobs vacant.
