5 Things Rosemount Residents Should Know: Happy Columbus Day -- or Not

Yes, there's more rain in the forecast today. We'll see. (Do you think it rained on Christopher Columbus when he landed on our shores in 1492?)

  1. The Columbus Day forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Otherwise, skies will be partly sunny, with a high near 78, and south-southeast winds from 7 to 15 mph. There’s just a slight chance of showers tonight, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 56.
  2. Today is the day on which we (or some of us) celebrate Columbus Day, even though the actual date is Oct. 12 – the day in 1492 on which Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World. It became a federal holiday in 1937, but it’s become somewhat controversial in recent years. One thing on which everyone can agree: There’s no mail delivery today.
  3. The meets at 6 tonight at Dakota Ridge School, 4629 144th St. W. in Apple Valley. On the agenda: the official Oct. 3, 2011, enrollment, and a discussion of MCA results and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) assessment data. The public is invited.
  4. Alexandra McLaughlin, a senior at Rosemount High School, received a Certificate for Superior Writing in the 2011 National Achievement Awards in Writing sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). She is one of four recipients in District 196, 13 in Minnesota and 520 in the nation chosen to receive an award, based on writing samples submitted last year when the recipients were juniors.
  5. In addition to Columbus Day, today is also national Angel Food Cake Day. (Far better than yesterday’s holiday: National Moldy Cheese Day.)
