Catapults, Circuits and Bridges at Westview's First Family Engineering Night

Westview Elementary School in Apple Valley hosted more than 300 participants at a hands-on science and math event.

Students and families at Westview Elementary School in Apple Valley tried their hand at constructing mini-catapults, wiring circuits and building bridges out of candy on Thursday night.

More than 300 people the school's first-ever Family Engineering Night, courtesy of The Works Museum and Flint Hills Resources. The event was designed to expand students' experience with science and math by providing participants with a variety of hands-on engineering activities, according to a news release.

"Through our programs at our museum and in schools, such as our Family Engineering Nights, we inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers through hands-on engineering activities,"  The Works Museum Director of Corporate Relations Kris Best wrote in the release.

“Students have limited in-class opportunities when it comes to learning about the engineering design process and how engineers use math and science to solve problems,” said Scott Lindemann, vice president and manufacturing manager at Flint Hills Resources.
