District 196 School Board Approves Filing Dates for Board Candidates, Preliminary Budget

Four school board members' terms end in January, and will be up for election in November.

The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district board on Monday approved the filing dates for candidates who want to run for one of four school board seats up for election in November. Because there is no primary election in these races, the filing dates will be Aug. 2-16.

Four board members' terms expire Jan. 2, 2012. The board members to whom those seats belong—Joel Albright, Rob Duchscher, Jackie Magnuson and Bob Schutte—intend to run for re-election in November, said Communications Director Tony Taschner.

Interested candidates can turn in affidavits to the Superintendent's office from Aug. 2-16, along with a $2 filing fee or 500 signatures.

The board also approved its preliminary 2011-12 budget, ; the budget remained unchanged.

Projected general fund expenses in the budget exceed revenue by about $6.8 million, Director of Finance and Operations Jeff Solomon said, which the district plans to fill with money from its fund balance. The district had expected to spend fund balance when looking at its five-year budget plan, he said.

The preliminary budget projects about $285.2 million in revenue for 2011-12, and about $292 million in expenses. The general account, which represents the largest part of that general fund at $201.8 million in expenses, actually shows that its revenues should exceed expenses by about $19.4 million; other funds provide for the overall deficit.
