Dog Tricks, Cupcakes and Pottery; Pick Up a New Skill Through Community Ed

School District 196 has a bevy of classes coming up this spring for local residents.

School District 196 is offering a handful of art, cooking, health and hobby classes this spring, including a cupcake baking course and pottery classes. Check out the course descriptions below, or click on a link to register for a class. Information courtesy of School District 196.

Dog Tricks

When/Where: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Rio Gran Training Academy.
Description:
Enjoy time with your dog discovering basic to complex tricks. Learn how to break down tricks for easier training and how to turn simple tricks into complex. Tricks include shake, dance, fetch and others. Rio Gran Training Academy instructors, lifelong passion for dogs, experts in dog training practices, have helped dogs and owners build strong relationships.
Cost:

All About Cupcakes

When/Where: 6 to 9 p.m. on March 5 at Scott Highlands Middle School in Apple Valley.
Description:
Cupcakes are in! Learn how to create the same type of cupcakes that are selling at specialty bakeries. Discover baking, various frosting, filling and decorating techniques. Leave with a box of finished cupcakes to share with others. Supply fee of $14 payable to instructor in class. Demonstration, hands-on, tasting, cupcakes to take home and other samples. Nancy Burgeson, a candy-making instructor for years, is skilled and knowledgeable.
Cost:

Pottery: Bowls, Beads and Baubles

When/Where: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from April 24 through May 8 at Greenleaf Elementary School's art room.
Description:
Create fun pottery to enhance your home, office or attire. No prior skill necessary. Learn pottery basics including slab and coil techniques, while working at your own pace. Make numerous items including plates, vases, jewelry and more. Pottery wheel is available for use. Decorate projects with an array of glazes. Clay, glazes and firing included in fee. Lynn Mueller, practicing artist, is a School District 196 art teacher.

Ceramic Board Games

When/Where: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 7 and May 28 at Scott Highlands Middle School in Apple Valley.
Description:

Create your own board game.  Plan out your theme and ... Go!  Make a game board from ceramic tiles and create game pieces from clay.  Decorate them and write your own rule book. Instructors from Color Me Mine, a make it and take it pottery program in Eagan.Cost: $59 per person. Ages 8-12 welcome. Click here to register.

Emergency Room 101

When/Where: 9:30 a.m. to noon, Monday June 24 through Thursday, Jun. 27
Description:
Become a student doctor as you learn about the human body and basic first aid through hands-on activities in the emergency room. Create a life-size model as you explore the circulatory, skeletal and other human body systems. Participate in a mock emergency situation, create a basic first aid kit, sculpt a heart and more, in the Science Explorers emergency room. Science Explorers instructors are dedicated to helping children learn about their world through science.Cost: $99 per person. First- through fifth-grade students welcome. Click here to register.
