Eastview Wins State Championship

The Lightning boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome.

The Eastview boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome.

In what proved to be a closely fought match, Eastview led 2-1 at halftime. But, Blaine tied the score with about 19 minutes left in the match.

Three minutes later, Eastview went ahead for good on Jake Opheim's second goal of the match. Pierce Erickson had the assist on the game-winning goal.

Scoring for the Lightning in the first half were Michael Stockton, off a Sam Fluegge corner kick three minutes into the game; and Opheim, off a header from a Fluegge free kick in the 21st minute.

Third-seeded Eastview and upset-minded Blaine will battle for the Class 2A state boys soccer championship at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Metrodome.

The Lightning, 14-2-4 overall, will play in their second consecutive state title match. Last year, they lost to Eden Prairie.

This year, Eastview is facing Blaine, a squad that entered the state tournament unseeded and that defeated top-seeded Champlin Park and fifth-seeded Bloomington Jefferson on its way to the championship game.

According to Minnesota Soccer Hub, Pierce Erickson has been the Lightning’s leading scorer in the state tournament with three goals in two games. Jacob Opheim and Michael Stockton also have scored for Eastview. Kyle LaMott has eight saves so far in the tournament.

BLAINE AT A GLANCE
Blaine enters the title match with a 16-3-1 overall. The Bengals finished second to Champlin Park in the Northwest Suburban Conference regular-season standings.

In the post season, Blaine was the top seed in Section 7AA and defeated Forest Lake and Coon Rapids for the section championship and a trip to the state tournament.

T.J. Soehn, Colton Nelson and Mitch Boege have scored for the Bengals in the state tournament. Tyler Carlson has recorded three saves.
