Rosemount City Council Applauds RHS Marching Band for State Championship Win

Mayor Bill Droste handed out plaques to a few marching band students and three directors during the City Council meeting this week.

The marching band had a very successful season after securing many awards, including winning the Minnesota State Championship for the sixth year in a row. 

During this past Tuesday's regular City Council meeting, the marching band and its directors were recognized for a job well done. A brief video clip of the band's state championship performance was played for audience members and . 

"As it has for the previous five years, the band completes a season in which students, their directors and their families have brought honor to the high school and the community they call home," Mayor Bill Droste said.

Some of the marching band's highlights this season were remaining undefeated in its state and regional competition, as well as finishing sixth out of 52 bands at the Bands of America competition in St. Louis this fall. In addition, "the band was champion in Class AAA with awards for Outstanding General Effects and Visual Execution," according to Droste.

Just this past month, the marching band won the 'Youth in Music' state and regional grand championships for the sixth straight year, as well as won the Outstanding Color Guard Caption Award, Droste said.

"We're very fortunate to have a culture that exists at our school and [in] our band program in which performance, high expectations and excellence is a part of that culture, [as well as] our strong work ethic," band director Steve Olsen said. "We're very proud of our kids and our staff in what we're doing."

"And also, [we owe] a big thank you to the council and to Mayor Droste for their support of not only what we're doing at Rosemount High School, but [of the city's] thriving arts community," Olsen said.
