Westview Elementary on the Run for Oklahoma Tornado Relief

The students and staff at Westview hosted their annual Bulldog Fun Run on Monday morning.

Usually, the proceeds from Westview Elementary's annual Bulldog Fun Run are reinvested in the Apple Valley school's playground. But this year, students and staff are running to a different beat.

Moved by scenes from Moore, Oka., where a recent tornado devastated a wide swath of the city, the students and staff at Westview decided to send their annual Fun Run pledge dollars to help elementary schools in the city rebuild after the disaster.

"We were looking at benches and trees and things to shade the playground, but then we decided to do something better with it," said Anne Appleyard, a staff member at the school.

The Fun Run, coordinated this year by Westview physical education instructor Shirley Buck, usually brings in roughly $2,500 in pledge money from the community. The event, open to students and families at the school, consisted of a mile-long run for the students, warm-up exercises and a visit by several mascots, including Goldy the Gopher. The event was first held four years ago, according to Buck.

The Apple Valley Fire Department and Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland participated in the event.
