Apple Valley HS Wrestling Coach Jim Jackson Steps Down After 32 Years

Jackson was a part of all 20 of the wrestling program's team state championships.

Head Wrestling Coach Jim Jackson has retired from coaching, the school announced Tuesday.  

Jackson, who coached in the program for 32 years, plans to keep teaching in District 196; he currently teaches physical education at in Apple Valley.

Jackson's decision was based heavily on wanting to spend more time with his family, according to a press release from the school.
 
Jackson was part of all 20 state-championship wrestling teams at Apple Valley High School, the release says. He was an assistant coach for 15 years before becoming the head coach for the 1995-96 school year. As a coach, he has the highest winning percentage (95.8 percent) in the history of Minnesota wrestling, with a record of 619-26-3.

The Eagles have won seven most recent Class AAA state wrestling team championships, and 11 of the past 12 state titles, according to the release. The team was ranked first in the nation in 2010 and 2011, and third this past season. 

Jackson's wrestlers earned 56 individual state titles under his coaching tenure.

He's also earned multiple National Coach of the Year awards.

"Beyond the wins and losses, Coach Jackson has been a dedicated professional in the coaching and teaching world," the press release reads. "Over the past 32 years, his impact on thousands of student-athletes is immeasurable."
 
The school is accepting applications for a new wrestling head coach until May 25. Those interested should submit a resume to Pete Buesgens, AVHS athletic director, by that deadline.
