Apple Valley Wrestling Team Wins 7th Straight at State

The Eagles ultimately defeated St. Michael-Albertville to capture the Class 3A title Thursday night.

The wrestling team extended its state championship streak to seven on Thursday night, as the Eagles ultimately defeated St. Michael-Albertville 49-24 at the Xcel Energy Center to take the Class 3A title.

The Eagles blasted Wilmar 58-12 in the first round, lost just one match in a 62-3 semifinal win over Prior Lake, and beat St. Michael-Albertville 49-24 in the Class AAA finals to make it seven straight state championships.

Against Willmar, the No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Eagles won the first five weight classes for a 23-0 lead before Willmar got on the board.

After an overtime loss at 138 pounds, the Eagles dominated the next five bouts with four pins and a tech fall to extend to a 52-3 lead.

In the semifinals, Apple Valley won 13 of 14 matches and had a 59-0 lead before Prior Lake got on the board.

In the finals, St. Michael-Albertville actually led briefly early in the match—they led 6-3 after three bouts—but Apple Valley dominated the middle weights to turn the tide.

Starting at 138 pounds, the Eagles got four straight pins from Dakota Trom, Dayton Racer (138), Mark Hall (145), Mason Manville (152) and Brandon Kingsley (160), and tech falls wins in the next two matches for a 49-12 lead.

Seven Apple Valley wrestlers were named to the all-tournament team in Class 3A, as well: Maolu Woiwor, Shamar Williams, Dakota Trom, Mark Hall, Mason Manville, Brandon Kingsley and Daniel Woiwor.
