Eastview Beats Stillwater 3-1, Advances to Class 2A Boys Soccer Finals

The Lightning beat the Ponies 3-1 in the 2A Boys Soccer semifinal.

UPDATE 9:50 P.M. MONDAY—The Eastview boys soccer team has punched its ticket to its second consecutive Class 2A state championship game.

The Lightning earned a spot in Thursday’s title game by defeating Stillwater, 3-1, in the semifinals Monday evening at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Eastview, 14-2-4 overall, will meet Blaine in the championship game. Blaine scored its second upset of the state tournament Monday afternoon when it defeating Champlin Park.

The Lightning stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Jake Opheim netted his team’s first goal with 14 minutes left in the half on a throw-in by Sam Fluegge. Pierce Erickson made it 2-0 with a minute left with a nifty goal.

With 32 minutes left in the match, Erickson scored his second goal of the game on a pass from Jon Lenz.

Stillwater cut the lead to 3-1 on a penalty kick with seven minutes remaining.

The Eastview High boys soccer team will be out to reach its second consecutive Class 2A state championship match Monday when it meets Stillwater in the state semifinals at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

The Eastview-Stillwater match will be the second semifinal of the day and is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. The first match, pairing Blaine and Bloomington Jefferson, is set to start a 4 o’clock.

Eastview, the third seed in the state tournament, reached the semifinal with a 2-0 victory over Moorhead in quarterfinal action Oct. 25. The Lightning, 13-2-4 overall, got on the scoreboard with about 27 minutes remaining in the first half when Michael Stockton netted a goal on a throw-in by Sam Fluegge. Pierce Erickson made the score 2-0 with a breakaway goal with about 14 minutes left in the half.

Kyle LaMott played a strong game in goal for the Lightning.

Stillwater, the number-two seed, defeated Owatonna, 2-1, on Oct. 25. Sam Rasmussen led the Ponies, 15-1-4 overall, with a goal and an assist.

Eastview defeated Minneapolis Southwest, 2-0, in last year’s semifinal before losing to Eden Prairie in the state finals.

In Monday’s other semifinal, Blaine will be going after its second consecutive upset when it meets fifth-seeded Bloomington Jefferson. Blaine shocked the tournament’s top-seed, previously unbeaten Champlin Park, by a 2-1 score on Oct. 25.

The winners of the semifinal matches will meet for the state championship at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Metrodome. The losing teams will meet in the third-place game at 4 p.m. Tuesday, also at the Metrodome.
