Minnesota Renewable Energy Challenge

The MN Renewable Energy Challenge (R.E.C.) starts with an 8-week student design and build season in which teams construct small wind turbines with the goal of creating something both efficient and elegant. The season culminates with a Challenge Day where teams bring their wind turbine to be scored on energy output in the wind tunnel, along with an industry knowledge component. We are very excited to introduce a new Industry Knowledge Component: Renewable Energy Careers. As part of the Challenge this year, teams will be researching the vast array of renewable energy careers! We will also have demonstrations on renewable energy and a fun solar boat race.

R.E.C. teaches the basics of engineering design principles and experimentation. It also introduces the next generation of engineers, scientists, computer programmers, technicians, lawyers, policymakers, and project managers to the challenge and promise of renewable energy.

Twenty four teams of students (4th through 12th grade) from all over the state of Minnesota will be competing with their designed wind turbines on Saturday, May 5th at the School of Environmental Studies in Apple Valley. The 2nd Annual Minnesota Renewable Energy Challenge is organized by High Tech Kids and KidWind. There will also be exhibits/activities from Leonardo's Basement, Bakken Museum, SheerWind, SES Foundation and Innovative Engineers from the University of Minnesota.

Event is sponsored by Mortenson Construction, Xcel Energy, Dakota Electric and SheerWind.
