Matthew Gweh, All-American Soccer Player

The junior forward at Eastview High School has been selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's 2011 Boys High School All-America Team. He helped the Lightning earn a second-place finish in this year's Class AA state tournament.

Gweh, a forward at Eastview High, has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s 2011 Boys High School All-America Team.

Gweh is the only Minnesotan on the 77-member team, which was announced Thursday.

According to Minnesota Soccer Hub, the Lightning junior led the state in goal scoring during the regular season, with 21, and was third in assists, with eight.

Combining his regular-season and post-season production, Gweh finished with 28 goals. He scored a goal in 11 of his team’s final 12 games.

Gweh helped lead Eastview to a second-place finish in the Class AA state tournament, where the Lightning lost to Eden Prairie, 3-1, in the at the Metrodome. He scored his team’s only goal in the game, which ended up being on the only game the Lightning lost all season.

He and teammates Mike Bonderud, Joe Karam and Sam Ruelas were named to the all-tournament team.

Gweh, Bonderud and Ruelas also were named to the all-state team.

Eastview ended the year 20-1-1, including 8-0-1 en route to winning the South Suburban championship.

Gweh and the other All-Americans will be honored at the NSCAA’s annual convention in Kansas City, MO Jan. 14.
