Section Final on Horizon for Apple Valley Girls Hockey Team

The Eagles beat Park Cottage Grove on Saturday to advance to the section 3AA title game against Eagan; the winner moves on to the state tournament.

After , the No. 3 seed girls hockey team this year will play in the section championship for a state berth.

The Eagles beat No. 2 seed Park Cottage Grove 3-2 on Saturday in a section 3AA semifinal game. They'll play Eagan, the No. 1 seed in the section, for the section championship at 7 p.m. Wednesday at in Inver Grove Heights.

Though the Eagles are 0-2 against the Wildcats this season—falling 3-1 and 4-1—Wednesday's game should be a "barnburner," Eagles Head Coach Don Erdall wrote in an email. In both games, the teams play was more evenly matched than the scores reflect, he wrote.

Apple Valley finished 6-10-1 on the season in South Suburban Conference play; Eagan finished 13-2-2 in conference.

In Saturday's game against Park, the Eagles led 3-0 at the end of the first period, after goals by freshman Maddie Schroeder, junior Marie Breckner and Jordyn Haupert; Emily Everson assisted on the first goal, Haupert and MacKenzie Ess earned assists on the second goal, and Breckner assisted on the third.

Park scored its two goals in the second period. Apple Valley goalie Hailey Sampson blocked 11 shots in the third period, and 23 of 25 shots on the night, to help the Eagles to the win.

Apple Valley, who finished  beat Rosemount in its section quarterfinal game this season.
