Sports Roundup: Boys Basketball Team Starts Sections Thursday

Irish seeded sixth, will face a Cretin-Derham Hall team they beat in OT during the regular season.

Now that the wrestling and boys swimming state tournaments have wrapped up, the boys basketball team is the last winter squad still in action. They'll take on Cretin-Derham Hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday in St. Paul.

Here's a brief rundown of how the seasons concluded for Rosemount's winter teams:

BOYS BASKETBALL: The sixth-seeded Irish (11-15) go on the road to face the third-seeded Raiders (18-8) on Wednesday, and while Cretin-Derham Hall has the better record, Rosemount won the only meeting between the teams this season, 57-55 in overtime. In that game the Irish had an eight-point halftime lead but needed overtime to prevail. The other good news for Rosemount is that juggernaut Eastview (25-1) is on the opposite side of the bracket.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Irish were seeded sixth for the Section 3AAAA tournament, and lost their first-round game at Apple Valley 69-39. The Section 3AAAA championship between top-seeded Eastview and No. 2 Park is 7 p.m. Thursday at Hamline University.

BOYS HOCKEY: The Rosemount boys pulled a minor upset in their first Section 3AA game, as the ninth-seeded Irish beat eighth-seeded Woodbury 4-3. But Rosemount's reward for that victory was a matchup with top-seeded Eagan. The Wildcats won that game 12-0, then went on to win 7-1 in the semifinals and 10-1 in the finals on the way to securing a state tournament berth.
