Sports Roundup: Fall Sports Season Begins For Apple Valley, Eastview

Several Eagles and Lightning athletic squads began their 2011 campaigns last week.

Editor's note: Each week, Apple Valley Patch will round up the results of Apple Valley and Eastview high schools' athletic events that we weren't able to cover in full. A number of teams from and high schools began their fall sports season last week, with more set to start this week.

Apple Valley Girls Tennis

The Apple Valley girls tennis team emerged from a four-match set in the Iron Range unscathed after defeating Duluth East, Grand Rapids, Virginia and Eveleth-Gilbert in a two-day tournament.

The Eagles topped Duluth East, Grand Rapids and Virginia by 4-3 scores before putting away Eveleth-Gilbert by a 7-0 count.

Victorious against the Greyhounds were: Dani Tobroxen, Mia Davis, Anna Nguyen at singles, and the doubles teams of Nina Le/Mouyheang Bun and Britney Kocken/Joy Hartl. 

Winning versus Grand Rapids were: Malini Wijesinghe and Jazmin Awada at singles and the doubles teams of Kati Erb/Katrina Volgelgesang, Kocken/Hartl and Bun/Nguyen.

Ensuring the triumph at Virginia was: Wijesinghe, Davis and Laura Wolff in singles and Le/Nguyen in doubles.

The Eagles host Lakeville North on at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Apple Valley Boys Soccer

The defending state Class AA champion Apple Valley boys soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in just its second game as Waconia's Holy Family Catholic hung a 2-1 overtime loss on the Eagles on Monday.

Previously, the Eagles had topped Owatonna by a 3-1 score in the season opener last Thursday. David Racine, Mitchell Dawson and Connor Flanagan scored for Apple Valley in that game.

The Eagles play at Richfield at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Eastview Boys Soccer

With a 4-1 defeat of Roseville on Thursday and a 2-0 besting of Cretin-Derham Hall on Saturday, the Eastview boys soccer team is perfect on the season overall and against the Suburban East Conference.

Mathew Gweh leads the Lightning with two goals and two assists through the first pair of games, with Brennan Espinda Banick logging three assists and Matt Miller two goals.

Eastview plays at Coon Rapids at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Eastview Girls Soccer

Like the Eastview boys, the Lightning girls also opened the season at 2-0 with a pair of wins over Suburban East teams.

Eastview destroyed Roseville by an 8-0 score in the opener last Thursday, then followed up with a 3-2 home overtime win versus White Bear Lake two days later.

Paris Sanders and Taryn MacMillan lead the Lightning with four points apiece, with MacMillan scoring three goals and adding an assist, while Sanders has two goals and two assists; Leah Nesheim has two goals to go with one assist for three points. Goalkeeper Anhthu Huynh has 17 saves on her first 19 opportunities.

The Lightning play at Coon Rapids at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Apple Valley Girls Soccer

The Apple Valley girls soccer team opened the year with an 0-2 record after losses of 3-1 to Owatonna and 2-1 to Stillwater last Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Individual statistics were not available. The Eagles host Farmington at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Results were not available from scheduled competitions involving: Eastview girls tennis, Eastview cross-country, Apple Valley swimming/diving.
