Minnesota Zoo's Seals and Snow Monkeys Get Short Shrift from Lawmakers

The Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley lost out on $15 million in state funding when lawmakers decided not to pass the bonding bill.

Hawaiian monk seals and snow monkeys are among the losers in the Minnesota House's May rejection of an $800 million bonding bill.

The Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley had requested $15 million from lawmakers for a variety of projects including:

  • renovations on the million-gallon Hawaiian monk seal tank
  • updates to Discovery Bay
  • a remodel of the snow monkey exhibit
Lee Ehmke, the zoo's director, told the Pioneer Press he was hoping lawmakers would fund the projects during the next legislative session.

"In the grand scheme of things, it's a setback rather than a change of course," he said.

State lawmakers are still funding the zoo to the tune of $5.5 million per year, about a fifth of the zoo's annual operating budget.
