Much of the curriculum is interdisciplinary and incorporates environmentally-based questions into the learning. It's adjacent to the Minnesota Zoo, which partners with the school on various projects. Each trimester, students take a seven-day intensive course, which becomes the students' sole academic focus for the seven-day period. Students can participate in sports and other extracurricular activities.

Fourth-graders take a yearly trip to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning center, and the school hosts annual parent and family nights.
