Olympic Dreams Fade for Apple Valley Wrestler

The International Olympic Committee announced Tuesday it will cut wrestling from the Olympic games, beginning in 2020.

Mark Hall II, a nationally ranked freshman at Apple Valley High School, has already won two Minnesota championships and spent half of last year training at the U.S. Olympic wrestling facility in Colorado. "I've dreamed about it ever since I was a kid, then in 2020 they take it away," he told the Pioneer Press. "It's one of the very first Olympic sports. How can they just drop it?" Wrestling Champ Mark Hall Likely Won't Be at Apple Valley High School This Year

Hall would have been a freshman at AVHS, and already had won two individual state wrestling championships as a seventh and eighth grader.

The Pioneer Press reported on Tuesday that "a person with knowledge of the situation" said Hall wasn't enrolled at AVHS. Hall told Patch via Twitter on Tuesday that he's in Michigan with his family now, and likely will attend school there. Apple Valley HS Wrestling Coach Jim Jackson Steps Down After 32 Years

Jackson was a part of all 20 of the wrestling program's team state championships.

Apple Valley High School Head Wrestling Coach Jim Jackson has retired from coaching, the school announced Tuesday.   Jackson, who coached in the program for 32 years, plans to keep teaching in District 196; he currently teaches physical education at Falcon Ridge Middle School in Apple Valley. Jackson's decision was based heavily on wanting to spend more time with his family, according to a press release from the school.   Jackson was part of all 20 state-championship wrestling teams at Apple Valley High School, the release says. He was an assistant coach for 15 years before becoming the head coach for the 1995-96 school year.
