Aging Populations Could Mean Changes at Elementary Schools in District 196

The district's student population centers are beginning to shift south and east, leading to shrinking elementary enrollments in portions of the district.

Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Get our newsletter | Blog for us The western half of Dakota County is getting grayer, and that could have a substantial impact on local schools, according to Independent School District 196 officials, who met on Monday to discuss long-range alternatives for the district's elementary schools. For decades, new housing developments in cities like Eagan and Burnsville have drawn in young families and buoyed school enrollment levels in those communities. But that pattern is starting to shift, as the residents of Dakota County's traditional population centers age in place and new developments spring up in the central and eastern portions of the county, said Superintendent Jane Berenz. "In the past, in…

Senior-Student Learning Buddies Program Celebrates 15 Years

Learning Buddies is an intergenerational program that brings older adults to classrooms to help elementary students with reading, math and science.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Goff Public. Facilitated by DARTS, Learning Buddies is an intergenerational program that brings older adults to classrooms to help elementary students with reading, math and science. The program began in Eagan in 1997 with a handful of adults who read with children at Glacier Hills Elementary School. How Are New School Achievement Ratings Determined?

We provide more detail on how the new Multiple Measurement Rating system works.

The Minnesota Department of Education this week released the details of the Multiple Measurement R system, which the MDE believes is a "fairer, more accurate" measurement system to replace the federal Adequate Yearly Progress standards of the No Child Left Behind act. Minnesota received a waiver from NCLB earlier this year. Below is more explanation of how the scores and designations for MMR are determined. Find out more about Apple Valley schools' scores here. All schools receive an MMR score based on points earned in: Scoring for the first three areas is based on state test results from 2009-10 and 2010-11, the release says. Schools also receive two other ratings: Beyond that, 10 District 196 elementary schools are Title I schools, which…

For me, the teacher who made the most lasting impact was my high school social studies teacher, Mr. Douglass. He was an engaging and creative instructor, but what I most remember now is the advice he gave us as we decided what to do with the rest of our lives. Basically (paraphrasing here), he told us to go where we'd be surrounded by the smartest people possible, because that's how we'd learn …   more ›

For First Time in 2 Decades, District 196 Weighs Year-Round School Option

District officials might implement the concept on a limited, voluntary basis, but many questions remain.

Could year-round schooling come to School District 196? At an annual District 196 School Board meeting on Monday, district officials discussed the advantages and drawbacks of the concept—the first formal conversation on the subject in roughly two decades. At the meeting, school board members asked district staff to explore the concept and return to the board with answers concerning the cost, feasibility and desire for year-round school. If the idea is implemented, it would likely be on a limited, voluntary scale, with one school or magnet program choosing to adopt it on an experimental, pilot-program basis, district officials said. "It’s not really an idea yet, it’s a concept," said board member Art Coulson. "I think the implementation of …
