Eastview Wins State Championship

The Lightning boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome.

The Eastview boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome. In what proved to be a closely fought match, Eastview led 2-1 at halftime. But, Blaine tied the score with about 19 minutes left in the match. Three minutes later, Eastview went ahead for good on Jake Opheim's second goal of the match. Pierce Erickson had the assist on the game-winning goal. Scoring for the Lightning in the first half were Michael Stockton, off a Sam Fluegge corner kick three minutes into the game; and Opheim, off a header from a Fluegge free kick in the 21st …

Eastview Beats Stillwater 3-1, Advances to Class 2A Boys Soccer Finals

The Lightning beat the Ponies 3-1 in the 2A Boys Soccer semifinal.

MONDAY—The Eastview boys soccer team has punched its ticket to its second consecutive Class 2A state championship game. The Lightning earned a spot in Thursday’s title game by defeating Stillwater, 3-1, in the semifinals Monday evening at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Eastview, 14-2-4 overall, will meet Blaine in the championship game. Blaine scored its second upset of the state tournament Monday afternoon when it defeating Champlin Park. The Lightning stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Jake Opheim netted his team’s first goal with 14 minutes left in the half on a throw-in by Sam Fluegge. Eastview's Mathew Gweh Takes Soccer Skills From Liberia to U.S.

Eastview boys soccer fans cheered their team to an impressive 21-1-1 record during the fall 2011 season, the only loss coming in the state championship Thursday against Eden Prairie. Some of the loudest cheers came for Mathew Gweh, who ended the season as the high scorer in the state in boys soccer. Gweh was named the Pioneer Press's boys soccer player of the year, and reporter Tim Leighton's story delves into Gweh's upbringing in Liberia—from where he emigrated to the United States with his family in 2005—how he got to Eastview and how he approaches his game. Story, Photos: Eastview Boys Soccer's Perfect Season Halted In State Final

The Lightning boys soccer team fell 3-1 against Eden Prairie in the Class AA title match Thursday.

Eastview senior Brennan Espinda Banick carried the runner-up trophy off the Metrodome turf, trying to fight back his emotions as he wore his Lightning boys soccer jersey for the final time. The midfielder fought back his emotions after Eastview’s 3-1 loss to Eden Prairie in the state finals, knowing his squad came within minutes of bringing a championship home. “It’s just been incredible all around—the team chemistry, what we did going undefeated until now,” he said. “Obviously not the way we want to go out, but we put on a show for the fans. Don't forget that 9 p.m. Monday is the deadline to enter a photo of your child's Halloween costume in our Patch costume contest!

Eastview Boys Soccer Downs Mayo 2-1 in State Quarterfinal

The Lightning earned a spot in the state semifinals on Tuesday.

The Eastview boys soccer team advanced to the Class AA state semifinals with a 2-1 win over Rochester Mayo on Thursday in the state quarterfinals at Park Cottage Grove. The Lightning advanced to face either Minneapolis Southwest or Anoka in the semifinals on Tuesday. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Metrodome. The Lightning (19-0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Eastview’s Mathew Gweh scored both goals on the night, finding the net at the 8:06 mark, then scoring again at the 27:36 mark of the first half. Mayo scored with nine minutes remaining to cut the lead to 2-1, but it was too little, too late. The Lightning out-shot Mayo 9-7 in the game. Mayo finished the season with a 13-4-2 record.

Story, Photos: Undefeated Eastview Boys Soccer Headed To State With 3-1 Win Over Eagan

The top-ranked Lightning turned back an upset bid by No.5 Eagan to gain their first boys state soccer tournament berth.

Sophomore forward Pierce Erickson scored twice and top-ranked Eastview could do little wrong in advancing to the boys state soccer tournament for the first time with a 3-1 win over conference rival No. 5 Eagan in the Section 3AA finals. Erickson put in two goals in a first half filled with fireworks, and that was all the Lightning needed to claim a trip to state Tuesday at Park of Cottage Grove. “We’ve found ways to win when we’ve played well, we’ve found ways to win when we haven’t played well,” said Eastview head coach Scott Gustafson. “We’ve found ways to win when Mathew Gweh scores a ton of goals.
