Twenty District 196 Students Qualify for State Debate Tournament

The State Debate Tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota.

  Editor's Note: The following is a news release from Rosemount, Apple Valley Eagan School District 196. Twenty District 196 high school students had top finishes at the Section 3 debate tournament Jan. 4-5 and qualified to compete at the State Debate Tournament, which will be held Jan. 18-19 at the University of Minnesota. District 196 students swept all six qualifying spots in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Miriam Kelberg of Apple Valley High School finished first in Lincoln-Douglas debate, followed by Ryan Lowder and Nurry Goren of Eagan High School, Kezia Jenkins of Apple Valley, and Anant Naik and Nikhil Venkatasubramanian of Eastview High School. Rosemount Irish Out to Score Another Football Postseason Upset

The unseeded Irish, who defeated favored Stillwater and top-seeded Edina in the past two games, will play fifth-seeded Lakeville North in tonight’s Class 6A semifinals at the Metrodome.

Game time is 7 p.m. Over the past two weeks, Rosemount (7-4) has knocked off favored Stillwater, 7-6, in the Section 3AAAAAA-Section 4AAAAAA crossover playoff game and top-seeded Edina, 14-10, in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Now, the Irish will play Lakeville North (10-1), which avenged its only loss of the season last week by defeating Prior Lake, 23-3, in the state quarterfinals. Rosemount (7-4) trailed 10-0 at halftime, but scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns. Eastview Wins State Championship

The Lightning boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome.

The Eastview boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome. In what proved to be a closely fought match, Eastview led 2-1 at halftime. But, Blaine tied the score with about 19 minutes left in the match. Three minutes later, Eastview went ahead for good on Jake Opheim's second goal of the match. Pierce Erickson had the assist on the game-winning goal. Scoring for the Lightning in the first half were Michael Stockton, off a Sam Fluegge corner kick three minutes into the game; and Opheim, off a header from a Fluegge free kick in the 21st …

Rosemount Track and Field Athletes Head to State

The state track and field championships are set for this weekend. Rosemount High School has a number of athletes in the competition.

A number of Rosemount High School athletes will compete in the Minnesota State High School League track and field championships this week. The two-day event will be held Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul Freshman Rachel Schow could be poised to challenge for a state title in the 100-meter hurdles, but she faces some tough competition. Her time of 14.49 is just behind defending champion Jessica January of Richfield (14.29). January won the event in 2011 with a time of 14.78 and set the Class AA record in 2010 with a time of 14.33. Schow will also compete in the 200-meter dash. Natalie Busher will represent Rosemount in both the high jump and triple jump while Katie Duff will compete in the discus throw. Madeline Phillips…

Apple Valley HS Teams, Athletes Making State Tournament Appearances

The Apple Valley High School teams and athletes will be busy this week at a number of state high school tournaments.

Apple Valley High School will be well represented at a number of Minnesota State High School League state tournaments this week.  Boys Tennis Sam Hoyt and Tanner Raymen will represent the Eagles in the boys doubles tennis tournament. The pair is set to begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center. The tournament runs through Friday. Girls Lacrosse Apple Valley (13-4) is the No.-4 seed and will face No. 1-seed Eden Prairie (16-0) in a State tournament semi-final match on Wednesday. That match will take place at Chanhassen High School at 6 p.m.  The winner will face either No.2-seeded The Blake School (14-2) or No. 3-seed Stillwater (14-2) in an afternoon game on Thursday.
